Introduction

The Chronicles of Humanity is an original science fiction machinima series I've been working on for a long time (I came up with the initial idea three and a half years ago) and it's finally nearing completion. Or at least the first season is. The second season shouldn't take quite that long to make.

After all the Star Wars films I've made, it's about time I came up with my own, so here we go. It has taken a lot longer to prepare than any of my other projects. Why? Because I thought it was important to create a setting where all the details are thought out, so I can refer to things as needed to help build up the universe. It makes for a much more believable story if you know there's more going on in the world than what's visible on camera.

Through out this all I've been lucky enough to have the help of Kim, who questioned my ideas, pointed out when I came up with something that didn't work right and made more than a few suggestions that could only improve what I was trying to do. She has kept pushing me to put as much into this as I can, so this has turned into a huge project. There are twenty-eight speaking characters (that was fun to cast), all sorts of locations created with three different games, custom content, two more seasons worth of plot plus a few ideas for further stories later on, extra videos and more.

Now the time is nearly here to start releasing the episodes. It's been fun and I hope people enjoy it.

More to come with each episode.

And yes, that really is Felicia Day in the trailer ;)

Archives

Yesterday I posted the first of the Archives, which are going to be short videos that don't always add anything to the main plotline but help to flesh out the setting and show events that don't really fit into the series itself.

Expect more to be released alongside the other episodes in the coming weeks.

Felicia Day

I have a feeling I'm going to get asked about this quite a bit so I thought it worth writing up a post I can direct people to.

Felicia Day is indeed playing a part in the series. It started about a year ago, when I was working on part of the series for my degree (final year project). I approached Felicia to see if she would be interested in voicing a character for what would go on to be a series. She read through the script, liked it, agreed and was a little concerned about not having time to voice a main character so she opted for a reoccurring role (four episodes, including the first one released today) instead.

A bit later on, since Felicia had this whole Dr Horrible thing happening, long time friend and cast member, Elizabeth and I met with Felicia online and we recorded our scenes together. It was great fun and I still can't quite believe we did that.

For those who are wondering, I feel I should point out that Chronicles of Humanity is NOT the machinima project Felicia has hinted at several times over the last few months. That is something she is writing herself and I don't really know anything about it.

Although I've been making online videos since 2002, it's very exciting to have reached the point where someone like Felicia is willing to come on board and chatting with her about her work on The Guild has really taught me a lot about web video. Thankyou!

Episode Two, Kim and Sound

Episode two is online and we're introduced to new characters, specifically Adam and Ravyn. With these two, we'll be seeing what the average citizen has to say about the events taking place around them. This is something rarely seen in scifi shows like this, which tend to focus on the heroes and villains. Of course, Adam and Ravyn are an integral part of the story, so they're not completely isolated, as will become clear next week.

This episode is also the first to be written by myself and by Kim Genly, who suggested (or as she prefers to say, beat me with a stick until I fixed it) significant improvements to the dialogue and it didn't seem right to not credit her for that. We'll be seeing more of that in the coming weeks as well.

One last thing I'd like to talk about is the lack of sound during the space scenes, since I have been asked about that. This was deliberate, I thought it would add more realism to the show. It also cuts down on the production time for each episode, which is always a nice bonus.
